Airbnb launches new initiative to bolster regional pubs
A joint initiative between the NSW government and Airbnb is set to provide a major boost to regional pubs throughout the state. Launched on Sunday, the Airbnb Country Pub Project is inviting people to nominate their favourite country pub to receive a grant of up to $50,000 to help revive and promote the venue.
The project was officially launched at Sofala’s Royal Hotel by Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres and Airbnb spokesperson Brent Thomas. Mr Ayers said the project would provide welcome assistance to smaller regional communities looking to attract tourism to the area.
“Tourism is critical to the economy of local communities, ensuring the employment of 90,000 people across regional NSW,” he said.
Airbnb came up with the idea for the project on the basis of research into the trends of Australian tourists. The research, conducted by YouGov Galaxy, found that while 70 per cent of Australians would like to take a trip to regional Australia, only 14 per cent had spent a night in a regional pub in the past 12 months.
The project is a world first from Airbnb, and will aim to introduce Australian tourists to a host of historic communities.

Harbour View Hotel in The Rocks is for sale.
Publican Brian Perry is set to offload the Harbour View Hotel in the Rocks, following his decision to put it on the market. Sitting in the most tightly held hotel precinct in Australia, it is expected to sell for around $12 million. If it sells in that vicinity, it will be an impressive payday for Mr Perry who purchased the property through his Repeller Nominees Pty Ltd company in 1998 for $2.18 million, according to CoreLogic data.
JLL national director John Musca said savvy buyers have the opportunity to own the building for less than the price you would pay for an exclusive house in the area, with residential rates averaging $20,000 per sqm.
It is listed with JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group who are seeking expressions of interest until July 25.

Woolworths, Ganim family sells Cambridge Tavern, Fairfield to Iris Capital
Sam Arnaout’s Iris Capital has extended its NSW pub spending spree to more than $160 million in just nine months after buying the Cambridge Tavern in Sydney’s west for $56 million.
The single-level pub, which stands on a near 6000-square-metre site at 11 Alan Street in Fairfield, has 30 gaming machines and is ranked as the state’s 43rd most profitable gaming venue, according to the latest NSW Department of Industry report
Iris Capital, which last month bought Manly’s landmark Steyne Hotel for $65 million from a group of investors that included Arthur Laundy and John Singleton, bought the leasehold to the Cambridge Tavern from Woolworths-backed pub operator ALH Group and the freehold from Brisbane’s prominent Ganim family in a deal put together by JLL’s John Musca and Savills Brisbane.
